dataset contains the Canadian Hydrographic Units (CHU) for the Northern
Appalachian–Acadian Region of Canada and cross-border watersheds of the United
States. The CHU layer is a nested watershed classification system that divides
and subdivides regions into six successively smaller hydrologic units, each of
which is identified by a unique code.</abstract>
<purpose>This dataset contains the
Canadian Hydrographic Units (CHU) for the Northern Appalachian–Acadian Region
of Canada (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and eastern
Quebec) and cross-border watersheds of the United States (Maine, Vermont, New
Hampshire, New York). CHUs are arranged as a nested system, which divides and
subdivides regions into successively smaller hydrologic units, from the largest geographic area (CHU2 drainage
basins) to the smallest (CHU12 cataloging units). To create the CHU system,
provincial-scale watershed layers were first pieced together to form a draft
CHU12 layer, which was then merged with existing hydrologic units (HUCs) on the
U.S. side of the study area. Provincial and national cross-border boundaries
were manually stitched together, and polygons were split or merged as necessary
to meet the HUC12 size criteria as developed by the USGS &amp; USDA. Once the
draft CHU12 layer was complete, unit boundaries were modified to harmonize with
the base hydrography catchments, which ensured that the drainage area for
dendritic network spatially aligned to its corresponding CHU. CHU12s were then
grouped into CHU10 units, which were then grouped into CHU8 units, and so on.
Where possible, existing provincial and national watershed layers were used to
guide groupings. Where watershed data was not available, or where boundaries
did not align with the base hydrography, CHUs were manually grouped together
based on similar geography and outflow location. For more information, please
