Name: High Maple Potential / Couche à potentiel acéricole élevé
Display Field: CF
Type: Feature Layer
Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon
Description: Forest stands dominated by mature sugar maple trees with high value opportunities for the hardwood wood products manufacturing sector and the maple sugary sector. The new HMPL contains approximately 9,400 hectares of maple dominated stands. Many of the stands within the layer are now eligible for a harvest treatment, but I draw your attention to the following important details related to timber harvesting in the HMPL.Harvesting operations must be conducted in accordance with the Forest Management Manual for New Brunswick Crown Lands (Crown Operational Outcomes), and in particular, Objective 5.6 and Appendix 5.DNR staff will closely coordinate with you on the harvesting prescription utilized in the HMPL, monitoring of prescription success, stakeholder feedback, and opportunities for continuous improvement.DNR staff will select a sample of HPML harvest sites to undergo professional tree marking prior to commencement of operations as a pilot project to determine if this technique can be a cost-effective means at improving sugar maple silvicultural outcomes and stakeholder confidence. Approximately 4,300 hectares (46%) of the HMPL falls within the Conservation Forest. Included in the Conservation Forest is approximately 1,900 hectares of Nature Legacy areas, which are not eligible for harvest treatments.Over time it is expected that the HMPL layer will evolve. Stands, or portions of stands, within the HMPL may be removed from the layer if it is determined that they do not contain sufficient potential for future maple sugary development. Similarly, high quality maple stands may be added to the layer at the discretion of DNR staff. Data created Dec 20, 2025 based on GPS and field data. Data will be updated a few times a year.
